John A.
Seavey Sr.
Married to Kathy (45 years)
Father to John Jr., Jeff, Dean, Robyn
Grandfather to 10
Born in Boston, MA, 1941, John was raised 20 miles North
in Lynnfield, MA. After high school, he attended the University
of Illinois, graduating (1963) with a B.S. in Aeronautical/Astronautical
Engineering and a good number of flying hours as a commercial,
instrument pilot (the U of I offered flying and engineering
courses side by side).
Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force
through the campus ROTC program, Pilot Training at Williams
Air Force Base, Arizona came next. An Active
Duty tour as a T-38 Instructor Pilot at the same base followed
training. Mesa, Arizona was home during this assignment.
Fortunately, (he would now say providentially) the very
whimsical airline hiring door opened at the end of the Air
Force assignment and John was hired by Continental Airlines
in February, 1969. The family moved to Irvine, California
in October, 1969 and subsequently to Battle Ground, Washington
in August, 1975. After a very exciting, challenging and satisfying
career spanning 34 years, John retired as a Boeing 777 Captain/Flight
Instructor in June, 2003. John absolutely LOVES retirement
and the freedom it offers to be involved with his family
and to serve the Lord in various areas of ministry.
Having been initially drawn by the Lord in 1972 through
Kathy’s patient, loving and reverent witness, John
trusted Christ in 1973. Over the intervening years, the Word
of God has had an ever increasing influence. The most significant
spiritual event was coming to an understanding of the Doctrines
of Grace and the Sovereignty of God in 1990. Interestingly,
John and Kathy came to this understanding at nearly the same
time through independent study. Previous studies became far
more clear and relevant in context, which brought a renewed
excitement in the things of God.
This “excitement” has grown exponentially in
recent years through the writings of John Owen, Martin Luther,
Jonathan Edwards, Thomas Boston, Thomas Watson and other
Puritan authors to name a few. Since these authors are so
centered on the Word of God, the beauty of God’s character,
His providence, His matchless grace, and magnificent sovereignty
have become increasingly evident and have profoundly affected
John’s thinking and life practice.
John currently teaches an evening home fellowship, facilitates
a morning men’s study, and maintains the Sunday service
audio message recording, video projection ministry and church web site.
